Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Classes

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes revolve around grappling and ground fighting. Most of the techniques focus on taking your opponent to the ground where you work to control them and make them submit to you by ‘tapping out’. Central to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is the belief that a smaller, weaker person can defeat a bigger, stronger assailant. They do this by using leverage, grip, knowledge, tactical skills and problem solving. They also apply a range of techniques such as chokeholds and joint locks.

Students are ranked depending on their level of skill and experience. Beginners start as white belts before progressing to become blue, purple, brown and black belts.

What Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Lessons Can I Join?

Are you looking for BJJ classes near me? We have a range of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes including Beginner, Mixed and Intermediate/Advanced lessons.  If you have never trained in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) before, or have trained for a few weeks or months, then please start off by joining our Beginner classes.  Your fellow students will include those who have never trained before plus more advanced beginners!  And you don’t need a gi for your first few classes – just training kit with no zips and/or buttons on any item.  If it does, you won’t be able to train in it, so please do double check.

Beginner Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Classes

Beginner classes run on a continuous basis so students are welcome to join at any time. We also have a White Belt Programme, which enables beginners to understand exactly what techniques, positions etc. they need to know in order to progress. It also illustrates a student’s obligations (for example, wearing a clean gi) and highlights what students can expect from their coaches. Once students have passed the programme they move to our mixed or intermediate sessions before joining advanced lessons. If you’d like to start training with us but aren’t sure which category you fall into just drop us an email.

What Should I Expect from my BJJ Class?

All our classes start with a vigorous conditioning warm up and instructors then move on to demonstrate techniques, set ups and positions. Students then drill these and use them in the sparring that follows. Sparring is not included in our beginner classes but is usually included in all others. This is because it enables students to put what they’ve learnt to the test and because many of our members participate in BJJ competitions throughout the year.

And, finally, for anyone planning to join our lunchtime BJJ lessons you’re welcome to arrive late/leave early if you need to!

What Should I Wear for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

We train with gi but, if you’re new to BJJ, it’s fine to wear shorts/leggings and a t-shirt for your first couple of classes. However, please note, there should be no zips and/or buttons on any item of clothing. Please also ensure your finger nails and toenails are short so you don’t accidentally scratch anyone.

Can I Have a Trial Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Class?

Potential students are very welcome to try out one of our classes for free. Just click here or  on the ‘Sign up for a trial class’ button and complete the form you’ll find there. Please note, we ideally ask for at least 48 hours’ notice as this gives us plenty of time to respond to your request.
