Class Information
Forms, kicks, punches, locks, clinches, throws and ground fighting techniques. All using the least amount of force necessary whilst making an opponent’s movements work for you.
Our Weng Chun Kung Fu classes last for an hour and a half and whilst it may change slightly from class to class the format is normally as follows: a warm up including, for example, stretching, running, skipping and shadow boxing followed by the learning of new techniques or drilling of past ones. This will then be followed by the practising of forms and/or sparring followed by stretching to finish.
At this point you may be wondering what “forms” are and why you would need to practise them. Forms are the structure on which the kicks, strikes, locks etc. used in Weng Chun Kung Fu are based. They are regularly practiced in the class, and individual students follow the instructor/s in carrying out the series of exercises that develop self-awareness, balance, relaxation and sensitivity. Students are taught to use the forms and ensuing techniques to target vulnerable areas of the body, for example, the eyes, throat, groin or stomach and to use the least amount of force necessary.
Classes are led by Bruce and/or George and are attended by students who have different levels of experience. Those taking part tend to wear tracksuit bottoms and t-shirts; and we have equipment at the gym that students are welcome to use for practicing strikes etc.
